ODFW Announces 2008 Summer, Fall Salmon Fishing Seasons for Columbia River

CLACKAMAS, Ore.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife today announced the upcoming summer and fall salmon seasons for the Columbia River, including the popular Buoy 10 fishery. While many ocean salmon fishing opportunities have been severely constrained for 2008, opportunities in the Columbia River remain comparatively stable.

Public discussion of summer and fall Columbia River salmon seasons took place during the spring meetings of the Pacific Fishery Management Council. While much of the talk at PFMC meetings this year was about the ocean salmon seasons, participants in the public process did help fish managers craft the following recreational fisheries for the summer and fall seasons (including remaining spring seasons where applicable):

Buoy 10 upstream to Tongue Point

Open for shad May 16 – December 31
Open for adipose fin-clipped adult coho (>16”) and adipose fin-clipped steelhead August 1 – December 31. Daily bag limit is two salmonids.
Adult chinook (>24”) retention allowed August 1 – September 1, or until a quota of 6,000 kept chinook is reached. Daily bag limit is two salmonids, but only one may be a chinook. Chinook may be fin-clipped or not.

Mainstem Columbia River from Tongue Point upstream to Bonneville Dam

Open for shad May 16 – December 31
Open for adipose fin-clipped steelhead May 16 – December 31 in the area below the I-5 Bridge and June 16 – December 31 in the area between the I-5 Bridge and Bonneville Dam. Daily bag limit is two salmonids.
Open for chinook salmon adults June 21 – June 28 and for chinook jacks June 16 – December 31. Daily bag limit is two adult salmonids and five jacks. Chinook adults and jacks may be fin-clipped or not.
Open for chinook salmon adults (fin clipped or not) September 1 – 16 except in the area between a line projected from Bachelor Island, Washington shore across to the Warrior Rock Lighthouse, Oregon shore downstream to a line projected from red navigation marker #62 at Deer Island, Oregon shore across to green navigation marker #63 at Martin Island, Washington shore, where retention of all chinook (adults and jacks) will be prohibited from August 1 – December 31. This area encompasses river miles 79-88, approximately. Open for adipose fin-clipped coho and chinook jacks (fin-clipped or not) August 1 – December 31. In open areas/periods, daily bag limit is two adult salmonids, but only one may be a chinook. Anglers may also retain up to five jack salmon.

Mainstem Columbia River above Bonneville Dam

· Open for shad year round
· Open for adipose fin-clipped steelhead June 16 – December 31. Daily bag limit is two salmonids.
· Open for chinook salmon adults and jacks June 16 – July 31, or until guideline is met. Daily bag limit is two adult salmonids and five jacks. Chinook adults and jacks may be fin-clipped or not.
· Open for chinook salmon (adults and jacks) and coho salmon August 1 – December 31. Daily bag limit is two adult salmonids and five jacks. Chinook adults and jacks may be fin-clipped or not. Coho retained downstream of the Hood River Bridge must be adipose fin-clipped.

Managers Close Columbia Salmon Fishing Season
Date:
April 16, 2008

Due to ideal fishing conditions and higher than expected catch rates, Oregon and Washington fishery managers decided Wednesday to close all sport fishing for spring chinook in the Columbia River below Bonneville Dam effective 12:01 a.m. Monday, April 21. The season was initially scheduled to end April 30.

The decision closes all angling for salmon, steelhead, and shad from Hayden Island to Bonneville Dam. Fishing from Buoy 10 to Hayden Island closed on April 5. Fishing above Bonneville Dam to McNary Dam is scheduled to remain open through May 10. Tributaries below Bonneville Dam remain open under permanent regulations.

This year’s upriver chinook run appears to be returning late, Kern said. To date only 7,800 chinook have gone over Bonneville dam. If the run estimate is revised to reflect a larger return the fishery may be reopened.

Sturgeon retention closes March 26 in John Day Reservoir

Clackamas, Ore.– Sturgeon retention will close at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, March 26 on the Columbia River and associated tributaries, from the John Day Dam upstream to the McNary Dam (John Day Reservoir). The retention closure remains in effect through the end of the year.

This stretch of the river is managed for a recreational harvest guideline of 165 white sturgeon. Current projections indicate the recreational fishery in the John Day Reservoir will meet the guideline Tuesday, March 25.

Catch-and-release angling for sturgeon in this stretch of the Columbia is allowed throughout the remainder of the year, except from May 1- July 31, when sturgeon angling is prohibited from the Hwy 82 Bridge (Hwy 395) upstream to McNary Dam to protect oversize spawning sturgeon. Catch-and-release sturgeon angling in this sanctuary area re-opens Aug. 1.

Spring chinook season in Hood, Deschutes Rivers opens April 15

The Dalles, Ore.
– A sport fishing season for spring chinook salmon will begin April 15 on the Hood and Deschutes Rivers under a temporary rule adopted by ODFW.

Fishery managers have set the Deschutes River bag limit for spring chinook at one adipose fin-clipped adult and five adipose fin clipped jacks from April 15 to July 31, 2008. Once anglers have caught their daily bag limit of one adult chinook on the Deschutes, they must stop fishing entirely for the day between the upper railroad trestle and Sherars Falls. This rule was put in place to protect wild Deschutes spring chinook.

Here are the fishing rules ODFW adopted:
Deschutes River:

From the mouth at the I-84 Bridge upstream to Sherars Falls, open to angling for trout, steelhead and adipose fin clipped chinook salmon from April 15, 2008 to July 31, 2008.

The catch limit is one adult adipose fin clipped salmon per day and five adipose fin clipped jack salmon per day.
All non-adipose fin clipped chinook salmon must be released unharmed.
It is unlawful to continue to fish from Sherars Falls downstream to the upper railroad trestle (three miles) after taking a daily bag limit of one adult chinook salmon.
Hood River:

From the mouth to Powerdale Dam (four miles), open to angling for adipose fin-clipped chinook salmon from April 15 through June 30, 2008.

The catch limit for chinook salmon is two adipose fin-clipped adults and five adipose fin-clipped jacks per day.
All salmon that have not been adipose fin-clipped must be released unharmed.
All other catch limits and restrictions remain unchanged from those listed for Hood River in the 2008 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations.

Notice: Because of the ever changing fishing regulations on the main Columbia River system it is very difficult to keep up with all of the changing regulations.. The best thing to do is check the ODF&W (click here) or WDF&W (click here) website's for the current fishing season (s) that are open on the section of the river that you will be fishing in.. And make sure to check to see if there is a current season open for the species of fish that you will be fishing for.. This may very from section to section. By just simply checking the current regulations before you head out to the river could have an effect on how pleasant your outdoor experience may be.. Always remember: Be Safe, Be Courteous, Have Fun, and Good Luck!!
