Spring chinook fishery opens on Powder River

LA GRANDE — The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) plans to release approximately 200 spring chinook salmon into the Powder River to create a unique fishing opportunity. A May 30 to September 1 angling season has been established to harvest these fish. The open area is from Hughes Lane Bridge near Baker City to Mason Dam. The daily bag limit is 2 spring chinook salmon.

Although the season officially opened on May 30, no fish were available until Thursday, June 4, when approximately 75 fish were released. ODFW plans to release the remainder of the fish during the next two weeks. The salmon are being released immediately below Mason Dam.

Imnaha, Wallowa rivers open June 13 to spring chinook fishing

ENTERPRISE, Ore. - The Imnaha and Wallowa rivers in Northeast Oregon will open to hatchery spring chinook fishing Saturday, June 13.

Biologists with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife estimate over 5,000 adult spring chinook will return to the Imnaha River, a tributary of the Snake. Of those, approximately 80 percent will be adipose fin-clipped hatchery fish. On the Wallowa River, a tributary of the Grande Ronde, the adult run is expected to exceed 2,500 fish of which approximately 50 percent will be marked hatchery fish.

From June 13 through July 12, anglers may fish for spring chinook from the mouth of the Imnaha River upstream 45 miles to Summit Creek Bridge. The Wallowa River will be open from the deadline at the lower end of Minam State Park upstream to the mouth of the Lostine River. Although ODFW biologists do not expect early closure, they caution the season could be curtailed for conservation reasons.

ODFW Announces Online Fishing and Hunting License Sales

Salem, Ore.—Outdoor enthusiasts can now purchase sport fishing and hunting licenses and tags through the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Online Sales Web site.

“This is a service our customers have been asking for—they can now buy license documents at their convenience,” said DeAnna Erickson, ODFW License Services Manager. “Both residents and nonresidents can use the site, which will save people a lot of time.”

While most licenses and tags are available for online purchase, license buyers have to plan ahead because many documents will be mailed. In some cases a temporary document can be printed and used until the annual document arrives. Postal delivery documents will be shipped within ten working days. A list of license documents for sale online and how they are delivered is available on the ODFW Online License Sales site. License documents for 2009 will go on sale Dec. 1, 2008.

ODFW accepts VISA and MasterCard to pay for licenses and related documents. Online license fees are the same as fees paid at an ODFW licensing agent or an ODFW office. An additional $2.00 shipping and handling fee applies to online purchases, except for instant fulfillment items. There is one fee per individual per transaction, regardless of how many items are purchased.

A list of frequently asked questions is available on the ODFW Web site, http://www.dfw.state.or.us/online%5Flicense%5Fsales/

The 2009 Oregon Big Game Regulations and the 2009 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations are now available online and vendors and at ODFW offices throughout the state. The new regulations take effect Jan. 1, 2009.

Notice: Because of the ever changing fishing regulations on the main Columbia River system it is very difficult to keep up with all of the changing regulations.. The best thing to do is check the ODF&W (click here) or WDF&W (click here) website's for the current fishing season (s) that are open on the section of the river that you will be fishing in.. And make sure to check to see if there is a current season open for the species of fish that you will be fishing for.. This may very from section to section. By just simply checking the current regulations before you head out to the river could have an effect on how pleasant your outdoor experience may be.. Always remember: Be Safe, Be Courteous, Have Fun, and Good Luck!!

We have high mountain lakes in the Wallowa and Elkhorn mountain ranges that hold rainbow, state record golden trout, kokanee, and unlimited brook trout. In Eastern Oregon there are no creel limits on most lake's brook trout creel! We invite you to come fish and take all the brook trout you can eat in a day from our high lakes. Most days to catch 100 to 300 brookies is not unusual. Drop by or call Blue Mountain Anglers and we will show you what we are talking about. Come fish N.E. Oregon!
